The Nepalese Society of Radiotherapy & Oncology (NESRO) successfully organized its first Continuing Medical Education (CME) program of 2026 on 23 January 2026 at the KCC Auditorium, Kathmandu Cancer Center (KCC).
The CME focused on Interventional Radiotherapy (Brachytherapy) and Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET)- two specialized radiation techniques that are increasingly relevant in modern cancer care. The program was attended by radiation oncologists, residents, and oncology professionals from different institutions.
Academic Sessions
The program began with a brief overview of NESRO ’s journey, milestones, and ongoing activities, presented by Dr. Gisup Nikha Prasiko, President of NESRO.
A dedicated scientific session addressed the role of radical brachytherapy in tongue cancer, including hybrid treatment approaches combining IMRT and interstitial brachytherapy, with emphasis on practical indications and case selection.
This was followed by case-based discussions from Kathmandu Cancer Center, highlighting clinical experience in:
• Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET) for extensive skin malignancies
• Intraoperative brachytherapy in selected oncologic settings
The research output from Kathmandu Cancer Center KCC was also presented, providing an overview of published work and institutional experience in lung and liver brachytherapy, reflecting the growing role of image-guided brachytherapy services in Nepal.
A pictorial review session showcased skin cancer and other challenging brachytherapy cases, encouraging interactive discussion and experience sharing among participants.
Scientific sessions were delivered by Dr. Simit Sapkota, Dr. Subhas Pandit, Dr. Gerim Prasia, and Dr. Abish Adhikari.
Conclusion
The CME marked a strong academic start for NESRO in 2026 and reinforced the importance of continued professional education and institutional collaboration in advancing radiation oncology services in Nepal. The program concluded with informal interaction and dinner.
